Madison, WI - Milwaukee, WI

Today marks the final day of the trip to reposition the RV from the dealer in Salt Lake City, UT to Milwaukee, WI where we paused the trip nearly 14 years ago.  I had arranged for climate controlled enclosed storage for the RV in Pewaukee, WI about 25 minutes west of Milwaukee.  So our first task was another stop at a self service car wash to clean up the RV before storage since it will be at least several months (if not until next spring) before we’ll have time to return and continue the trip.

After dropping the RV off for storage we took an Uber to the Pfister Hotel, the exact same hotel Timi and I stayed at with John and Jan Travis back in August of 2012.  From there, we walked three blocks to the Milwaukee Public Market for lunch where we ate on the rooftop patio at the Cafe Benelux before our 2:00 tour and only activity for the day, a tour of the Pabst Mansion.  Completed in 1892, the Pabst Mansion is an opulent, 37-room Gilded Age masterpiece. Built by beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst, this 20,000-square-foot Flemish Renaissance Revival estate features stained glass, intricate wood carvings, and an extensive collection of period.

The home has been meticulously restored to be exactly as it was during the ownership of Frederick Pabst.  It was one of the most complete and meticulous restorations of any historical home I have seen and far better than Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin we visited a few days ago.  The house has a very interesting history including 67 years of ownership by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

From there we walked along the Milwaukee waterfront which includes the striking Milwaukee Museum of Art returning to the hotel just in time for cocktails at the Pfister’s 23rd floor Blu.  As the pictures above show, it hasn’t changed at all in the last 14 years.  We concluded the trip before our flight home tomorrow morning with an excellent dinner at the Pfister’s restaurant, the Mason Street Grill.
